SICK Safe Robotics Area Protection

SICK’s Safe Robotics Area Protection safety systems form the foundation for productive and unrestricted human-robot interaction. By utilizing safety laser scanners and intelligent control logic, these systems enable collaborative robot applications without the need for separating safety fences. The robot dynamically adjusts its speed to the position of the person or stops safely when the safety field is entered. As soon as the area is clear again, the automatic restart function allows the process to resume immediately, minimizing downtime and maximizing throughput.

Unrestricted access without safety fences
The system enables a barrier-free production environment that reduces space requirements and improves ergonomic access for operators without compromising safety.
Dynamic speed adjustment
With features like sBot Speed, the robot simply reduces its speed when approaching an obstacle, rather than shutting down completely. This protects the mechanical components and keeps the process running smoothly.
Easy integration via URCap
Variants are available specifically for Universal Robots that can be configured directly via the teach pendant. Predefined logic and documentation significantly speed up the safety approval process.

Description

Safe Robotics Area Protection combines high-precision hardware with preconfigured software to minimize the effort required to integrate safety solutions. At the heart of the system are SICK’s proven safety laser scanners, which create flexible protective and warning fields around the robot station. Depending on the selected system variant—such as sBot Speed or sBot Stop—the safety behavior can be individually tailored to the specific application.

A key advantage is the high level of machine availability. While conventional safety devices often require manual reset after a stop, this system enables automatic restart as soon as the person has left the danger zone. This optimizes workflows and relieves staff of repetitive tasks.

Thanks to the provision of SISTEMA files, wiring diagrams, and detailed operating instructions, the system complies with all relevant standards for Performance Level d (PL d). Whether for pick-and-place, palletizing systems, or assembly tasks, Safe Robotics Area Protection offers a future-proof solution that can be expanded modularly and adapted to changing production layouts.

The system really shines in confined production environments or when humans are directly assisting the robot. It reliably prevents hands or fingers from getting caught between the tool and surfaces. For processes in which the robot occasionally operates inside enclosed machines, the system features a muting mode to maintain flexibility in the production flow.

The hardware is mounted directly on the flange and connected to the controller via two cables. Since configuration takes only a few steps—setting the IP address, defining the protective field length, and teaching the validation point—the system can be put into productive use quickly, even without in-depth expert knowledge.
