SICK End-of-Arm Safeguard

The SICK End-of-Arm Safeguard is a safety system designed for contactless collision avoidance directly at the robot tool. The system creates a protective field around the gripper stops the robot’s movement before a collision or pinch hazard occurs. This enables safe working in the immediate vicinity of the cobot, builds operator confidence, and significantly increases productivity in collaborative applications. Furthermore, the technical protection of the hazard zone considerably simplifies the safety validation of the entire system.

Contactless collision avoidance
The system detects obstacles in the tooling area early on and stops the robot as a preventive measure. This minimizes the risk of injury and ensures a smooth workflow without physical contact in the event of a stop.
Reduced effort for safety validation
Since potential pinch points on gripper are gripper safeguarded, the effort required for force and pressure measurements in accordance with ISO/TS 15066 is significantly reduced. This saves time and costs during the application acceptance process.
Quick plug-and-play integration
Thanks to its direct mounting on the robot flange and intuitive configuration via URCap software, the system is ready for use in no time. Setup is performed directly via the robot's handheld controller.

Description

The SICK End-of-Arm Safeguard was developed to make human-machine collaboration as intuitive and safe as possible. Instead of cordoning off the entire work area with large protective fences or floor scanners, this system specifically safeguards the area where the greatest danger lies: directly at gripper workpiece. The protective field moves dynamically with the robot arm, saving valuable floor space and allowing personnel to maintain maximum freedom of movement.

The system really shines in confined production environments or when humans are directly assisting the robot. It reliably prevents hands or fingers from getting caught between the tool and surfaces. For processes in which the robot occasionally operates inside enclosed machines, the system features a muting mode to maintain flexibility in the production flow.

The hardware is mounted directly on the flange and connected to the controller via two cables. Since configuration takes only a few steps—setting the IP address, defining the protective field length, and teaching the validation point—the system can be put into productive use quickly, even without in-depth expert knowledge.
